네덜란드 호린험에 위치한 하멜박물관(Hamelhuis Museum)에서 개최되는 초대전은 1653년 낯선 조선 땅에 억류되었다가 고국으로 돌아간 헨드릭 하멜(Hendrick Hamel)을 기리며 《 그립다 (I Long for My Home) 》 전시 제목으로 동양화, 조각, 설치 미술, 퍼포먼스 등 40여 점의 작품을 선보인다.

전시장 천장에서 바닥까지 길게 늘어뜨린 쪽빛 한지와 전통 창호지에 낸듯한 작은 구멍 너머로 비치는 <호모사피엔스> 홀로그램 영상은 한국적인 감수성으로 이방인 하멜의 고독한 마음을 어루만진다. 특히 개막식 당일에는 직접 쪽빛 안동포 치마와 흰 모시 저고리를 입고 하멜이 투영된 <호모사피엔스> 조각을 품에 안은 채 광장에서 고향 사람들에게 “하멜이 돌아왔다!” 라고 외치면서 항구에서 집까지 걸어서 하멜을 데려다주는 퍼포먼스를 선보여 그의 귀향을 동양의 깊이 있는 예술 언어로 재해석한다.

Presented at the Hamelhuis Museum in Gorinchem, the Netherlands, this invited exhibition commemorates Hendrick Hamel, who was held in the unfamiliar land of Joseon in 1653 before finally returning home. Under the title 《 I Long for My Home 》, it presents more than 40 works across Korean painting, sculpture, installation, and performance.

Through a holographic video of 〈Homo Sapiens〉, glimpsed beyond long sheets of indigo-dyed hanji suspended from ceiling to floor and through small perforations in traditional paper screens, the exhibition gently conveys Hamel’s solitude in a distinctly Korean visual language. On the opening day, the artist further reinterpreted his return home through a performance in which she cradled a 〈Homo Sapiens〉 sculpture onto which Hamel’s image was projected and walked with it from the harbor to his home, proclaiming to the townspeople, “Hamel has come home!”
